Tocumen International Airport (PTY), located about 17 km east of Panama City, is the country’s main international gateway and one of the most important hubs in Latin America. Known as the “Hub of the Americas”, it connects over 85–90 destinations across North, Central, and South America, Europe, and the Caribbean, with a strong focus on transit passengers.
If you have a layover, PTY is designed for quick connections—many transfers can be done without leaving the secure area.
History and Origins
The airport was originally built in 1947, later undergoing major modernization programs to support Panama’s growing role as a global logistics and aviation hub.
A significant expansion began in 2006, increasing gates and passenger capacity. The most important milestone came with the construction of Terminal 2, a $780 million project that opened operations in 2022, dramatically boosting capacity and efficiency.
Terminal 2 is noticeably more modern—if your airline departs from there, expect a smoother experience.
